Yusuke Urameshi is the main protagonist of YuYu Hakusho.

He was voiced by Nozomu Sasaki in the original Japanese and Justin Cook in the English dub.

What Makes Him A Shonen Rival?

• Heroic: Yusuke saves the world countless times and even brings Demon World in harmony through a democratic battle.
• Honorable: He is exceptionally honorable, being forgiving and holding notable standards in his actions.
• Tragic Past: When Yusuke was 3 years old, his father walked out on him and his mother Atsuko, leading her to raise Yusuke alone. Due to being a middle school dropout, Atsuko is unable to seek employment and instead resorts to prostitution. This lifestyle led to Atsuko becoming a neglectful alcoholic.
  • This negligence causes Yusuke to become a violent delinquent.
• Intelligent: Though impulsive and apparently lacks book-smarts, Yusuke is very street-smart and a genius when it comes to battle.
• Naturally Talented: Yusuke is incredibly gifted in combat and has a natural amount of high Spirit Energy.
• Arrogant/Jerkish: Yusuke takes pride in his fighting abilities to the point of being fairly cocky and underestimating opponents who don't come off as a threat to him at first glance. He is also rather sarcastic and rude.
• Pursues a Big-End Goal: After he gets fired as a Spirit Detective, Yusuke wants to look for his purpose after everything he has been through.
• Cynical: Initially, Yusuke had a dark view of the world and even believed that no one loved him, genuinely believing that their lives would be better for selfish reasons.
• Irritable: Yusuke can be quick to annoy.
• Persistent: Yusuke would push beyond his limits to save the world from dangerous foes.
• Redemption Arc: While he started off as a delinquent, after his first death, Yusuke would finally realize his potential and develop into a full-on hero.
• Is A Serious Threat: Yusuke was so physically strong as a delinquent to the point where he was the most feared punk in the city with many fearsome rumors about Yusuke spreading.
• Short-Tempered: Yusuke can be quick to anger at times.
