What Makes Him a Shonen Rival?[]
- Heroic/Anti-Heroic: In Sponge out of Water, Squidward participated in a battle against Burgerbeard in order to take back the Secret Krabby Patty Formula to save Bikini Bottom.
- Honorable: While Squidward gets easily annoyed with SpongeBob's antics, he does occasionally show how much he cares about him.
- Intelligent: Squidward is frequently shown to have much more emotional maturity and common sense than SpongeBob and Patrick combined.
- Arrogant/Jerkish: Squidward thinks he is a great musician/artist when he is not and he can be a jerk at times, especially towards SpongeBob.
- Cynical: Squidward is quick to be suspicious of people's ulterior motives.
- Pessimistic: Unlike the optimistic SpongeBob, Squidward has a pessimistic view of life.
- Short-Tempered: Squidward is very well-known for being extremely irritable, particularly when SpongeBob and Patrick's antics annoy him.
- Perpetual Frowner: Squidward rarely smiles around most people and regularly frowns.

Yes. While Squidward isn't officially SpongeBob's rival, there are many times when he does compete with the yellow sponge.
