What is the Work?[]

Malcolm in the Middle is a sitcom aired on FOX. It follows a highly intelligent teen named Malcolm as he attends a gifted program at his school while dealing with his dysfunctional and dimwitted family.

Who is the Candidate?[]

Reese Wilkerson is the deuteragonist of Malcolm in the Middle. He was portrayed by Justin Berfield.

What Makes Him a Shonen Rival?[]

  • Anti-Heroic/Anti-Villainous: Reese stops a burglar from robbing the house, which results in him being declared a hero by the police.
  • Honorable: Despite being the most destructive member of the Wilkerson family, Reese has lines that he wouldn't cross such as bullying Stevie Kenarban due to him being in a wheelchair.
  • Intelligent: Despite being much less book-smart than his younger brother Malcolm, Reese manages to be better at making elaborate schemes and has proficient culinary skills.
  • Naturally Talented: Reese is a better prankster and cook than Malcolm.
  • Arrogant/Jerkish: Though nowhere near as much of a narcissist as Malcolm, Reese can be cocky at times and is known for his reputation as the school bully.
  • Redemption Arc: Reese tones down his violent ways and becomes nicer as he grows older.
  • Short-Tempered: Reese is the most aggressive and violent of the family.
  • Spiky Hair: Reese is consistently shown to have spiky hair throughout the series.
  • Unnatural Hair Color: During Seasons 2 to 4, the tips of his naturally brown hair are dyed blonde.
  • Is a Blood Knight: As a school bully, Reese takes pleasure on beating up weaker kids and even participate in a wrestling club at school.
  • Vengeful: Reese can sometimes be vengeful towards his brothers, especially Malcolm, going as far as to pull pranks or beat them up without hesitation.
  • Is a Delinquent: Reese commits his share of misdemeanors such as vandalism and petty theft, going as far as to surpass his older brother Francis.
  • Is a Token Evil Teammate: While his whole family has done their share of misdeeds and have amoral moments, Reese is consistently shown to be the most destructive and immoral out of all of them, which makes him easily the worst.
  • Is Related to a Shonen Hero: Reese is Malcolm's older brother.
  • Has a Soft Spot for a Shonen Hero: Despite their clashing personalities and lifestyles, Reese would defend Malcolm at school if someone picks on him.

Verdict?[]

Yes. Malcolm and Reese's relationship is one of the most significant aspects of the show. In many ways, Reese serves as a foil for Malcolm. Most episodes feature them competing against one another. However, there are some episodes that show them working well together.
