Piccolo is one of the three tritagonists (alongside Bulma and Gohan) of the Dragon Ball franchise. He is voiced by Toshio Furukawa in Japanese, and Christopher R. Sabat in English.

What Makes Him a Shonen Rival?

• Heroic: Ever since his redemption in Dragon Ball Z, Piccolo plays a key role in saving the universe on multiple occasions.
• Honorable: Piccolo subverted his anti-heroic traits and becomes a more caring and protective individual to the point of risking his life to save Gohan on more than one occasion.
• Intelligent: Piccolo is incredibly level-headed and is a great mentor to Gohan, Goten and Trunks as he teaches them how to be excellent fighters.
• Jerkish: While he means well, Piccolo tends to be harsh and brutally honest with everyone around him.
• Naturally Talented: Being the reincarnation of King Piccolo, Piccolo inherits his abilities and uses them with ease.
• Cynical: Piccolo is usually doubtful about people's intentions.
• Redemption Arc: Piccolo started out as a final antagonist in the original Dragon Ball anime before becoming an ally in Dragon Ball Z.
• Is a Serious Threat/Villain: After Goku defeated King Piccolo, the latter gave birth to Piccolo as a egg before exploding. After some time, Piccolo participated in the 23rd Budoukai Tournament to seek revenge on Goku for his father's death.
• Short-Tempered: While he isn't as irritable or aggressive as Vegeta or even Goku, Piccolo can lose his patience at times, specifically when Goten and Trunks are not taking their fighting seriously.
• Is a Blood Knight: Though he doesn't show it openly compared to Goku and Vegeta, Piccolo, unlike most Namekians who are peaceful pacifists by nature, enjoys participating in battle.
• Is a Mentor: Piccolo famously guided Gohan, and also taught Goten and Trunks how to fight.
• Vengeful: Piccolo wanted to kill Goku for because he killed his father.
• Has Respect for a Shonen Hero: Piccolo deeply respects Gohan to the point he is considered as a surrogate father toward him.

Trivia

• Piccolo, along with his successor Vegeta, are overall considered to be the two codifiers of the Shonen Rival trope, with many shonen rivals taking influences from them, In fact, even Piccolo himself shares similarities with Vegeta.
