L Lawliet, also referred to as Ryūzaki, is the anti-heroic main antagonist of Death Note.

He was voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi in Japanese, and Alessandro Juliani in English.

What Makes Him a Shonen Rival?

• Anti-Heroic: L posthumously saved the world from Kira but has selfish reasons to take on the case due to being driven by a desire to win and also takes rather unorthodox methods while solving it.
• Honorable: Despite being a pragmatist, L still has a sense of justice and honor.
• Intelligent: L is known for his high intelligence which equals, if not surpasses Light’s
• Naturally Talented: While Light has only gotten into touch with his full intelligence upon gaining the Death Note. L on the other hand has already prevented WW3 at a young age.
• Pursues a Big-End Goal: L desires to save the world from Kira and “win” the case.
• Believes in the Power of Individual Strength: While not arrogant, L has an overall sensitive pride on his skills and is afraid to make errors.
• Is A Serious Threat: While not threatening world affairs or other heroes, L poses the most dangerous threat to Kira’s plan.
• Spiky Hair: L has spiky and messy black hair.

• L is a unique case for a Shonen Rival as the "shonen hero" he competes with is actually a pure evil villain.
  • In fact, for that reason the entire Death Note series was initially disallowed due to it originally being banned for Shonen Rivals to oppose a PE villain.
