Gary Oak is a major character in the Pokémon anime series.
He is voiced by Yūko Kobayashi in the Japanese version, and by Carter Cathcart in the English version.
What Makes Him a Shonen Rival?[]
- Anti-Heroic/Heroic: Gary helped Ash defeat J. and save a Shieldon from falling into her hands.
- Honorable: He develops a more honorable side as the story continues, congratulating Ash whenever he is defeated by him.
- Intelligent: Gary is overall quite intelligent.
- Naturally Talented: Gary was already a very skilled Pokémon trainer at the start of the story.
- Arrogant/Jerkish: He is overall very egoistical, and also regularly taunts those whose skills are inferior to him, namely Ash.
